One of the German National Railway “Güterwagens” (goods wagons) used to transport Jewish people to Birkenau for forced labor and extermination. No light, no air, and no stopping for days sometimes. In the background are the chimneys and stoves that remain as the only indication of the rows of barracks the laborers lived in, along with that beautiful Polish sky that seemed so at odds with the horrors we were told about that day on our tour. I like to refer to this picture as “A Beautiful Day at Birkenau”.
